TEXTURING THE SURFACE

TEXTURING THE SURFACE – Texture gives a unique look to the surface and surface may be anything such as paper,  canvas, or any thing. But first of all, we should know what is exactly a texture . In the world of art, feel of the canvas based on the paint used and method of application is a texture. It can be 2D or 3D which means it can be simply a texture which can only be seen i.e., Visual Texture.

Visual texture refers to the illusion of the surface’s texture. It is always a factor in a composition because everything has a surface and hence a texture. Photography, drawings and paintings use visual texture both to portray their subject matter realistically and with interpretation.

Another one is Tactile Texture which is in 3D effect which can be feel or touched. This is of paramount importance to three-dimensional design but of only moderate interest in two-dimensional design. The actual surface texture needs to either be felt, or seen with light raking across its surface to make the texture visible. For instance, use of rough surfaces can be visually active, whilst smooth surfaces can be visually restful. The use of both can give a sense of personality to a design, or utilized to create emphasis, rhythm, contrast, etc.

TEXTURING THE SURFACE

But generally people are not able differentiate these two texture effect  as all are called only texture, but an designer or an artist should know the difference between these texture. Textures range from the smoothest polished mirror to the roughest mountain range as seen from an airplane. Yes exactly texture can be as smooth as a silky fabric or can be as rough as a rock. Therefore, a single texture also reflects the mood and meaning of an art piece or design on any material. Some surfaces are inviting and some are repellent and so are the textures that suggest those surfaces. Most textures have a naturalistic quality; they repeat a motif in a random way.

An artist or designer can generate a number of textures by using different  medium and technique to develop some really new and  mesmerizing textures and in this way can become interested in making creative compositions and art work.

Inspiration for creating textures can be anything from our own simple world, nature, our ambience from any materialistic thing or some thing really very natural object and common materials which are used by us in our day to day life. A texture  can also give a very deep meaning to the composition or can reveals the feeling of an artist. While texture can make an image more interesting it is not a strong enough element to be useful for organizing a composition. Value and color contrasts are more efficient at that. Texture is one of the more subtle design elements. It can make an image richer and more interesting, but is not likely to save a poor composition all by itself.
