The conventional process involved transforming the sketches of the woven textile pattern onto a graph paper known as point paper, which was later used in setting up the looms by the weavers. These days, textile industry is seen to emerge as a growing business and to meet the increasing demand, the designers are turning tech savvy and are resorting to technical aids and designing software to provide better and improved product.  The process also involves digital printing. Though textile designing is a creative field and is all about your ability to think aesthetically, yet one should possess a deep knowledge about the properties of the yarn, the fibers, the thread and the dyes.

Placing the designs

The textile designers have their room for creativity and are often credited for the success of any collection. Patterns are often designed in a recurring manner, to strike a balance throughout the yardage. Though there are several layouts and conventional patterns which a designer could stick to, yet repeated placement of motifs in a particular pattern with contrasting colours and detailing helps to break the monotony in any design. The most common designs are the vertical and the horizontal placements of the motifs. Sometimes, the same pattern is printed in version of different colours, known as colorways. After the designing is done, the process of choosing the appropriate fabric to get the design woven on takes place.

Choosing the right fabric

The task of textile designing does not stop with the designing. The main task is to choose the fabric which is apt for your design and which can later on be processed into the final product. This involves the science behind the fabric. Therefore textile designing is a mixture of both art and science. It is a textile designer’s job to see which design will come out brilliantly in a fabric. He may choose from woven, knitted and non-woven fabric, depending upon the nature of the fabric which can further be classified into natural and synthetic fabric. He used the dyes and the methods of screen printing to print the designs onto the fabric. Apart from this, knowledge about proper inks and dyes also holds great importance when it comes to textile designing.

Textile designers should have an eye for creativity and should possess a quality of playing with colours. Depending upon the collection, a textile designer should think out of the box and try to come up with new and intricate designs. Apart from drawing and designing skills, a textile designer should also have hands on sewing and weaving skills. A degree in textile designing also helps to boost up your career.
