Mehendi commonly known as Henna is a paste made from henna leaves, which is applied on the hands and feet using a plastic cone.  In the Indian weddings, it is a tradition for the Indian bride to cover her hands and feet throughout with the designs of mehendi. Rajasthani mehendi designs are very popular when it comes to Indian Weddings. The designs in Rajasthani mehendi, mainly focuses on the patterns of flowers, peacock, leaves and other traditional motifs. The intricate and elaborate designs of Rajasthani mehendi take their inspiration from the folk dance, the art forms and the tradition of Rajasthan. Another very famous Rajasthani mehendi design is the peacock designs. The peacock is made more circular and abstract so that one does not identify with is easily. This is a complex design and is enclosed with small intricate designs to beautify it. Generally the arms of the brides are fully covered with designs of the henna while her feet are covered up to the calves. Another famous tradition in Indian weddings is writing of the grooms name on the bride’s hand, surrounded by other motifs of mehendi. This is considered auspicious.

An artist usually pays attention to the lines in  Rajasthani Mehendi designs. The lines help to give depth and heaviness to the unified design. They also help in completing the motifs. Thickening of the borders of any designs helps to make it prominent from the other motifs. Apart from the palms and the arms, the fingers are also covered with tiny angular designs. This helps to complete the looks of henna applied hands. In a typical Rajasthani wedding, the left hand of the bride with tattooed with the figure of a Rajasthani prince and the right hand is tattooed with the figure of a princess.
